Staff Biographies

Rabbi Gedalia Dov SchwartzRabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, Av Beth Din. Rabbi Schwartz, a leading authority in Jewish law, was the rabbi of the Young Israel of Boro Park for 18 years, and previously held pulpits in Rhode Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He has served as Av Beth Din of the Beth Din of America since 1991. He is the author of two books and numerous scholarly articles in the area of Jewish law. He is also the Rosh Beth Din of the Chicago Rabbinical Council.
 
Rabbi Mordechai WilligRabbi Mordechai Willig, Segan Av Beth Din. Rabbi Willig is the Rabbi Dr. Sol Roth Professor of Talmud and Contemporary Halachah and the Segan Rosh Kollel of the Kollel L’Horaah Yadin Yadin at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), an affiliate of Yeshiva University. Since 1974, he has been the rabbi at the Young Israel of Riverdale in Riverdale, New York. Rabbi Willig is an authority in Jewish law, with particular expertise in Jewish divorce and beth din matters.
Rabbi Yona ReissRabbi Yona Reiss, Chaver Beth Din. Rabbi Reiss is the Av Beth Din of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, a Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS, and Chaver Beth Din at the Beth Din of America. A Yadin Yadin musmach of RIETS and an attorney who was an associate for six years at the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, Rabbi Reiss is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he served as senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. He was previously the Max and Marion Grill Dean of RIETS, and before that he served as Director of the Beth Din of America. Rabbi Shlomo WeissmannRabbi Shlomo Weissmann, Menahel (Director). Rabbi Weissmann received rabbinical ordination from RIETS in 2001. He is a graduate of Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Prior to his association with the Beth Din of America, Rabbi Weissmann worked as an attorney at several prominent law firms, most recently Kelly Drye and Warren LLP. E-mail Rabbi Weissmann
Rabbi Michoel ZylbermanRabbi Michoel Zylberman, Gittin Coordinator. Rabbi Zylberman oversees the halachic aspects of gittin administered at the Beth Din. Rabbi Zylberman is a Yadin Yadin musmach of RIETS and a graduate of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kolel Elyon. Ilana BlassIlana Blass, Esq., Administrative Attorney. Ilana Blass is the primary manager of the commercial and matrimonial din torah (arbitration) caseload of the Beth Din. She also plays a role in the Beth Din’s handling of contested get matters. Ms. Blass graduated the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in 2003 where she was a member of the Cardozo Law Review. Following graduation, Ms. Blass was an associate at the law firms of Debevoise and Plimpton and Mandel, Katz & Brosnan. E-mail Ilana Blass

Helen Axelrod. Administrative Assistant. Mrs. Axelrod schedules gittin, and serves as an office administrator. Mrs. Axelrod brings a special combination of professionalism and sensitivity to her work, and serves as a reassuring voice to men and women who approach the Beth Din in circumstances that are often emotionally difficult. Chanie Zahtz. Administrative Assistant. Mrs. Zahtz maintains the Beth Din’s comprehensive files and oversees the din torah calendar and files for the Beth Din.
